FRIENDS OF GARNET VALLEY, WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!!
In March this year Judge Koturbash quashed the permit. He said the BC Mines Ministry acted “unreasonably” and the permit should not have been issued.
We all thought that this major threat to our health, welfare, and livelihoods in Garnet Valley had ended. Now the threat has returned.
THE BC MINES MINISTRY HAS GIVEN US EVERY INDICATION, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, THAT IT WILL BE ISSUNG THE PERMIT!!
Correspondence from Nicole Jones, the Senior Inspector of Mines and the Permitting Officer for the Garnet Valley Gravel Pit shows she is weeks away from issuing the permit for the Garnet Valley Gravel Pit.
This will be a disaster for all of us living and working in Garnet Valley:
- Massive gravel trucks on a narrow, winding country road, blind corners, no shoulders, with cyclists, equestrians, and hikers using it daily.
- People living just meters away from the noise and dust of crushers, excavators, and other heavy equipment.
- Farms directly below and vulnerable to the dust that will be generated.
- Residential homes directly below the steep slopes of the pit, where landslides have already occurred.
- Heavy industrial traffic pounding a country road to pieces, a road never designed to take this abuse.
- Serious loss of property values for every parcel on Garnet Valley Road.
This gravel pit permit is strongly opposed by:
- The Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association
- The District of Summerland, by unanimous council vote
- The Summerland Chamber of Commerce
- The Penticton Indian Band
- The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen
- The BC Provincial Environment Ministry
- The Trails of the Okanagans Society
- Our MLA, Amelia Boultbee
